Thing 23

Go back to your thoughts/ideas about Library 2.0. Has anything changed as a result of this experience? Very much so.

What were your favorite Things and discoveries? Librarything, Facebook

How did you connect with others doing the 23 Things On a Stick? Facebook, Ning

Were there any take-a-ways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you? Yes there were.

What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or content?
I think it was done pretty well. Maybe some warnings like you have 120 days, 90 days, etc. ??? Pobably wouldn't help; would still do minute although I would hope I learned my lesson.

If we offered a 23 More Things On a Stick program like this in the future would you participate? Yes

How would you describe your learning experience in one word or in one sentence, so we could use your words to promote 23 Things On a Stick learning activities to others? Don't delay, jump in and have fun!

Thing 22

Blog about how you plan to keep up with the Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 tools.

I think the 15 minutes a day is a good way. I have tried it in the past and failed but its a new day. I think if I build on what I have done here in those 15 minutes that will be a start.

Recommend a way to keep up that you have found useful.

Make a list. There is no better feeling that checking something off "the list"!!!

Thing 21

I did both of these.

Left comments for another member
Uploaded a photo to the Ning

Are you a member of any online communities? Yes.
Are any of these social networks appealing to you? I like Ning.
What did you find that was interesting and that you might use later? I might join one of the food networks later.

Thing 20

Facebook

Which groups did you join and why? I joined Librarians and Facebook. It sounded like it could be interesting - not formal like ALA.
Reflect on why Facebook may be the fastest growing social network. Is that reputation deserved? One reason that it is the fastest growing is because "everyone is doing it". Part of the reputation is deserved but, as in a lot of things these days, it is blown out of proportion.

MySpace

How are libraries using MySpace? They are using it to get themselves "out there" primarily with the young.
Did you find anything on a library's MySpace page that would be useful for your library? Probably the same things Denver and Hennepin have done. Wonder how they find the time...

If you created your own MySpace page, how do you plan to use it? I wasn't that ambitious!

Thing 19

1. Which podcast(s) did you listen to? I listened to several including the one abut Beth Kelly, Whitewater State Park and some other Minnesota podcasts.

2. Which of the directories did you find easiest to use? Yahoo probably although I liked EPN.

3. Has this Thing inspired you to do any podcasting yourself or to subscribe to a podcast to listen to it regularly? It has inspired me to subscribe which I did.

Thing 18

OK, let's see if this works!

What did you like or dislike about the sites you explored? Some are very poor quality, bad taste and stupid. But as in the above, there are lots of good ones that can teach you things and give good information. I liked the WSU one.

Why did you choose the video that you did? I had to keep in my gardening theme.

Can you see any ways to use video--YouTube or other sites--on your library Web site? We already do. See this:

Whew! I think I just ran a marathon! I had used these databases for all sorts of searches in the past but hadn't explored any of them to see what all you could do. Wow.

How can these tools be applied to your everyday work? RSS feeds to your common searches is a big one. I had often thought about a website but not from this angle.

How can these tools facilitate collaboration with your colleagues? If you were all working on a project on a certain topic of which no one was an expert or didn't already have resources this would work for that.

How can these tools benefit your patrons/students? Keeping track of your research and sharing with others comes to mind.

Thing 16

How might the RPC and the Teacher Guide help you help students plan and manage research projects? It gives a plan and a step-by-step. Besides ELM, I can see public libraries using it for lots of like things from searching the catalog to using the internet [and other databases that we pay for outside of ELM].

Can you think of any uses for library projects—could you use it to help manage a timeline for a project of your own? I was thinking about that when reading about the Thing. It would work.

Thing 15

If you tried Puzzle Pirates, write a blog post about how the interaction was with other sailors.
I don't interact and am a total failure at playing games.

If you chose Second Life, write a blog post about your findings and thoughts on Second Life. Is there a role for Second Life in libraries?
Tried that once upon a time too and didn't like it - at all :)

Thing 14

Very nice. I plan to use as our church library's catalog.

How popular were your books? Not so.

Did you find any discussions about your favorites? No.

Thing 13

Which start page did you choose? iGoogle
Why did that one appeal to you? I liked its organization and what it had there.
Will you make it your permanent home page? Yes.

Did you find a tool that has some uses for you at the library or at home? Calendar for home
Which tool(s) would you recommend to others? Calendar and todo list
How can the online calendars be useful to you? I can see my home calendar from work!
What about the to-do lists—helpful, too much work…? It depends on how you do these things. I already use one at work.

Did you try out Backpack? What did you think? Wow. Too much organization! Actually would be good to use with project management or for project management. Will have to take a deeper look.
Did you try any of the other tools in the list? No.

Thing 12

How do you think you can use these tools in your library or at home?

I don't have time to sit down at home to watch or listen to the news and its always the same same. These are great resources with different news!

Do these tools seem to be a productivity enhancer or a productivity detractor? It could be both. But if you are a reference librarian, its your job! Yay!

Have you ever read a story/item as a result of seeing it on one of these sites? I have now.

Thing 11

Can you see the potential of this tool for research assistance? Or just as an easy way to create bookmarks that can be accessed from anywhere?

Yes. I love this.

How can your library or media center take advantage of tagging and del.icio.us? Look at the sites in the Resource list above to see how libraries are using Del.icio.us.

Yes.

Thing 10

What did you find interesting about the wiki concept? You can get lots of ways and means.

What types of applications within libraries and schools might work well with a wiki? Intranets.

Many teachers/faculty "ban" Wikipedia as a source for student research. What do you think of the practice of limiting information by format? Not much. It is an interesting excerise in finding the info and then verifying it with another secure source.

Which wiki did you edit? 23 Things

Thing 9

Which of these tools is easier for you to use? Google docs probably even though they were similar. Although I edited the doc in ZW I am not sure you will be able to see it.

How do the features of each compare? Does one have features that would make you choose it over the other? I didn't compare them feature for feature but they both did what I wanted it to.

What would the Founding Fathers think? They would not be happy!

Thing 8 continued

What uses do these tools have for library or personal use? Take plain and ordinary and give it pizzazz!

Was the tool you used easy to navigate and understand? Pretty much.

Would you recommend it to others? Yes.

Do you use other sharing tools for photos, documents, or other creations that you would recommend? No.

Thing 7

Describe how your library uses email. Has it improved productivity? We use email for just about every communication in the library, to staff and to the public.

Share your thoughts on online reference using some of the other Web 2.0 communication tools.
These are the tools our public uses and we have to be able to communicate with them.

Are you an active user of text messaging, IM, or other communication tools?
No text messaging except when someone texts me. Use IM now and again.

Which OPAL or MINITEX Web conference (Webinar) did you attend? How was it? What do you think o this communication tool? ebooks and NetLibrary. It was good. I use it a lot. It saves time and money and is convenient, right at your desktop

'C' 'A' 'Letter 'V 'E' 'R29'

How can you use any of these tools in your library and media center? Reading programs, posters promoting library events, librarian trading cards all come to mind as possibilities. I agree.

What do you think of sharing photos online? I think its a great way to archive and share with family and friends easily.

Thing 4

I uploaded a picture. I will use this for my personal photos and maybe work too! It was simple and easy to do. There is always a concern about something being public but the video showed that it can be fun too so...

Thing 3

I used RSS feeds years ago but because they weren't pushed at me I ignored. Will try again! Added feeds to our ILS vendor which should help me keep up with what is constantly being updated. So, will try again! Added a fun gardening site too :)
